After a large fly tip was dumped in GreatMunden, we’re pleased to say the person responsible has been identified, their van seized and the waste cleared up at their expense. A satisfying result all round. The fly tip, which was reported on Tuesday 24 March by a member of the public, consisted of a house clearance spread generously across both a field and the road.
After a search through the waste that had been dumped, paperwork linking it back to a #London address was located. Officers then contacted the person linked to the address, when they found out that an innocent member of the public had paid a company to remove their waste, not knowing where it was going to end up.
After some determined patrol work, the van responsible for the fly tip was located on the A406 and stopped. The driver was issued a Community Resolution and given some clear instructions:
✅ Clear the Great Munden fly tip ✅ Clear another site chosen by police ✅ Provide proof of lawful disposal ✅ The van was also seized by officers.
We will always investigate fly tipping thoroughly. That includes searching dumped waste for identifying documents, completing follow up enquiries, and using powers to seize vehicles. Where appropriate, enforcement action will be taken by officers.
Motivated by the sudden loss of a van, the driver returned and cleared the site. The original victim even watched the clean-up take place and was delighted to see restorative justice in action.
Another great result for the team and a reminder to everyone, if you’re paying someone to remove waste, always check they’re licensed. If they’re not, you could end up paying the price too.
